Symptom

real.exe exits immediately after starting, error points to lines in physics namelist section, no other useful information.

Context

Multi-domain WRF simulation with max_dom=3, using physics schemes like NoahMP, Thompson microphysics

Root cause

WRF requires every array parameter in physics section to have exactly max_dom values, one per domain. If any parameter has fewer values (e.g. only 1 value instead of 3), namelist parsing fails immediately. Leftover ensemble forecast parameters also cause parse failures.

Solutions

1. fill-all-namelist-arrays · no feedback yet · rev 1

  1. Ensure every physics array (cudt, ifsnow, icloud, etc.) has exactly 3 values for 3 nested domains
  2. Set cudt third value to 1 even for innermost domain with no cumulus scheme (WRF rejects 0)
  3. Remove leftover ensemble parameters: maxiens, maxens2, maxens3, ensdim
  4. Re-run real.exe, it will complete with SUCCESS COMPLETE REAL_EM INIT

Verify:

grep "SUCCESS COMPLETE REAL_EM INIT" rsl.error.0000
