Symptom

tsc fails with TS2345 at a call site even though the value looks correct at runtime.

Context

Values come from process.env, JSON.parse, a query string, or a widened object literal.

Root cause

The expression's static type is wider than the parameter type. Runtime coercion is not a type-level conversion, and JSON.parse returns any only at the boundary, not after property access.

  1. Read the full error: it prints the expected and received types at the call site.
  2. Convert at the boundary instead of casting at the call: const port = Number(process.env.PORT).
  3. If the value is genuinely validated elsewhere, narrow it once with a type guard and reuse the narrowed value.

Verify:

npx tsc --noEmit

Expected: exit code 0

Lint diagnostics: missing_env
