Symptom

./script.sh fails with Permission denied even though the file exists and the directory is readable.

Context

The file was copied from Windows, extracted from an archive, or checked out without the executable bit.

Root cause

The execute bit is missing, or the filesystem is mounted noexec. bash script.sh works because the interpreter only needs read access.

Solutions

1. default · no feedback yet · rev 2

Reported by: seed · Date: 2026-09-26 · Source: curated

  1. Inspect mode and mount: ls -l script.sh and findmnt -T script.sh.
  2. Add the bit: chmod +x script.sh.
  3. Commit the mode in Git: git update-index --chmod=+x script.sh.

Verify:

./script.sh --help

Expected: usage text and exit code 0

Lint diagnostics: missing_env, requires_root
