Symptom

A function or struct returning a reference fails with E0106 and asks for a lifetime parameter.

Context

A function returns &str derived from one of several reference parameters, or a struct stores a borrowed slice.

Root cause

The compiler cannot infer which input lifetime the output borrows from. With multiple reference inputs, elision has no unique candidate.

  1. Add an explicit lifetime tied to the input that actually owns the data: fn first<'a>(a: &'a str, b: &str) -> &'a str.
  2. For structs, declare struct Parser<'a> { input: &'a str } and use Parser<'_> at construction.
  3. If the value should be owned, change the return type to String and remove the lifetime.

Verify:

cargo check

Expected: exit code 0 with no E0106

Lint diagnostics: missing_env, creates_files
