Symptom

open(file, 'w'/'a') or a write raises PermissionError: [Errno 13] Permission denied, though the file exists and is readable.

Context

The target file (or its directory) lacks write permission: read-only mode (e.g. 0444), different owner, or a read-only mount.

Root cause

The OS denies opening for write because the process lacks write permission on the file or its containing directory; Python surfaces errno 13.

Solutions

  1. Make the file writable: chmod +w <file> (or chmod 644 <file>).
  2. If the directory blocks creation, add write permission on the directory: chmod +w <dir>.
  3. If owned by another user, use sudo or change ownership.

Verify:

python3 -c "open('f.txt','a').close()"

Expected: exit code 0 after fixing permissions; exits 1 with PermissionError while read-only

Lint diagnostics: verify_inspects_file, missing_env, requires_root, creates_files
