Symptom

A model that used to construct now raises ValidationError with type=missing for a field that was clearly passed.

Context

Migration from pydantic v1 to v2, or a model that declares a field with Field(...) and receives an alias or a nested dict.

Root cause

In v2 the supplied key does not match the field name or its alias, so the field has no value. Common causes are alias= without populate_by_name=True, or passing an object instead of a dict to model_validate.

  1. Print the actual input: print(data) and compare keys with User.model_fields.
  2. If an alias is used, pass the alias key or set model_config = ConfigDict(populate_by_name=True).
  3. If the input is an ORM object, use model_validate(obj, from_attributes=True).

Verify:

python -c "from app.models import User; print(User.model_validate({'email': 'a@b.c'}))"

Expected: model instance prints without ValidationError
