Symptom

Import succeeds but expected attributes, classes or functions are missing (AttributeError: module 'X' has no attribute 'Y'). Inspecting the module shows it is a local .py file instead of the standard library or installed package.

Context

Project directory or current working directory contains a .py file whose name collides with a standard library module (email, json, random, typing, collections, logging, etc.) or an installed third-party package.

Root cause

Python's import system searches sys.path in order. The current directory (or the directory of the script) appears early, so a local file with the same name is imported instead of the intended module. The local file usually lacks the expected API.

Solutions

1. Rename the colliding local file (rename-local-file) · no feedback yet · rev 1

Applies to: Any Python project · Environment: python

  1. Identify the shadowing file: python -c "import MODULE; print(MODULE.__file__)"
  2. Rename the local .py file (and any corresponding .pyc / __pycache__) so it no longer matches the stdlib or package name
  3. Re-run the original import to confirm the correct module is now loaded

Verify:

python -c "import MODULE; print(MODULE.__file__)"

Expected: path under the Python standard library or site-packages, not a local project file
