RuntimeError: no current event loop after upgrading to Python 3.14

Symptom
asyncio.get_event_loop() raises RuntimeError: There is no current event loop in thread 'MainThread'. before any coroutine has run. A script that started its loop this way on Python 3.12 now aborts at import time or on the first line of main(), exit code 1.
Context
macOS or Linux, Python 3.14.6, no async framework involved. Trigger: synchronous code calls asyncio.get_event_loop() to hand a loop to run_until_complete() or create_task(). Appears right after upgrading a project from 3.12/3.13, or in a dependency that still does loop = asyncio.get_event_loop() at module scope.
Root cause
CPython deprecated the implicit loop creation inside asyncio.get_event_loop() in 3.12 and removed it in 3.14. With no running loop and no loop set on the current thread, the call now raises instead of silently creating one. asyncio.get_event_loop_policy().get_event_loop() raises the same way, and the policy API itself is deprecated for removal in 3.16, so it is not an escape hatch.
Solutions
1. Use asyncio.run() at the top level
- Delete
loop = asyncio.get_event_loop()andloop.run_until_complete(main()). - Call
asyncio.run(main())once at the entry point; it creates the loop, runs the coroutine, cancels leftover tasks and closes the loop.
python3 -c "import asyncio; print(asyncio.run(asyncio.sleep(0, result='ok')))"
Expected: prints ok, exit code 0
Notes: Inside Jupyter, pytest-asyncio, uvicorn or anyio this raises asyncio.run() cannot be called from a running event loop; there the correct fix is to await, not to run.

Failed attempts — 3 ruled-out approaches
asyncio.get_event_loop_policy().get_event_loop()— raises the same RuntimeError on 3.14 and adds a DeprecationWarning; the policy no longer fabricates a loop either.python3 -W ignore::DeprecationWarning— this silenced the warning on 3.12/3.13, but 3.14 removed the behavior, not the warning, so the RuntimeError still aborts the script.- Calling
asyncio.run()from inside a Jupyter cell or a pytest-asyncio test — raisesasyncio.run() cannot be called from a running event loop; the caller already owns a loop and must await.
Alternatives (reference only)
- Create and own the loop explicitly — Use only when you must hand a loop to an object constructed at import time. Prefer asyncio.run() or asyncio.Runner elsewhere.
- asyncio.Runner for several sequential runs
Boundaries
asyncio.run()creates and then closes its loop, so it cannot be used when a surrounding framework already owns one (Jupyter, uvicorn, anyio, pytest-asyncio).asyncio.set_event_loop(None)afterloop.close()is deliberate: leaving a closed loop installed makes laterget_event_loop()calls return a dead loop that fails withEvent loop is closedinstead.
