Symptom

One transaction aborts with deadlock detected while both statements look independent.

Context

Two transactions update multiple rows or tables, each acquiring locks in a different order.

Root cause

Each transaction holds a lock the other needs. PostgreSQL detects the cycle after deadlock_timeout and aborts one victim.

  1. Read the server log detail: it prints both statements and the lock each transaction waited for.
  2. Impose a global lock order, for example always update accounts in ascending id order.
  3. Keep transactions short and retry the victim on SQLSTATE 40P01 with jitter.

Verify:

psql -c "select deadlocks from pg_stat_database where datname = current_database()"

Expected: counter stops increasing under the reproduction load
