Symptom

The process starts from a directory where node_modules seems present, yet resolution fails.

Context

Monorepo, pnpm workspace, Docker image, or a globally installed CLI whose working directory differs from the project.

Root cause

Node resolves modules upward from the file that calls require, not from the shell's working directory. The dependency is installed in a different workspace or not installed at all.

  1. Print the resolution base: node -e "console.log(process.cwd(), require.resolve.paths('express'))" from the failing directory.
  2. Install in the workspace that owns the file: npm install express --workspace <pkg>.
  3. In Docker, copy package.json and the lockfile before npm ci, and run the app from the directory that contains node_modules.

Verify:

node -e "console.log(require.resolve('express'))"

Expected: absolute path inside node_modules and exit code 0

Lint diagnostics: missing_env, requires_network, creates_files
