Symptom

A CommonJS file calls require() on a package and Node throws ERR_REQUIRE_ESM.

Context

A dependency published as "type": "module", loaded from a .cjs file or a package without "type": "module".

Root cause

require() cannot synchronously load an ES module graph in a CommonJS context. The dependency's exports are not reachable through module.exports.

Solutions

  1. Convert the consuming file and package to ESM: add "type": "module" and use import.
  2. If the file must stay CommonJS, use dynamic import: const mod = await import('foo') inside an async function.
  3. For a dependency you control, ship a dual build and point exports.require at a CJS bundle.

Verify:

node -e "import('foo').then(m => console.log(typeof m))"

Expected: prints object or function and exits 0
