Symptom

Runtime TypeError when assigning to a property of a value that is undefined or null.

Context

Object initialisation that was skipped, nested assignment without creating intermediate objects, or assigning into a variable that was never given an object.

Root cause

The base of the property assignment is nullish. JavaScript does not auto-create intermediate objects on assignment.

Solutions

1. Create the object (or intermediate) before assignment (ensure-object-exists) · no feedback yet · rev 1

Applies to: Node and browsers · Environment: node · browser

  1. Initialise the target: const obj = obj ?? {}; then obj.prop = value;
  2. For nested paths use a helper or optional-chaining assignment is not available; create each level: obj.a = obj.a ?? {}; obj.a.b = value;
  3. Or use a library / structuredClone / immer if deep updates are frequent.
  4. When the target comes from a map or array, ensure the key/index exists first.

Verify:

node -e "const o={}; o.x=1; console.log(o.x)"

Expected: prints 1, exit 0
