Symptom

Runtime TypeError when accessing a property or method on a value that is undefined or null. Stack points to the line of the property access.

Context

Node.js or browser. Common after optional chaining was not used, after API responses that omit fields, after destructuring, or after async data that has not resolved yet.

Root cause

The left-hand side of the property access evaluates to undefined or null. JavaScript throws instead of returning undefined when the base is nullish.

Solutions

1. Guard with optional chaining or explicit null check (optional-chaining-or-guard) · no feedback yet · rev 1

Applies to: Node >= 14 and modern browsers · Environment: node · browser

  1. Replace obj.prop with obj?.prop (or obj?.prop?.nested).
  2. Or write an explicit guard: if (obj == null) { / handle / } else { use obj.prop }
  3. When the value comes from an API or async source, ensure the await completed and the shape was validated (zod, io-ts, or a simple shape check) before access.

Verify:

node -e "const o=undefined; console.log(o?.x)"

Expected: prints undefined, exit 0
