Symptom

An NPE points at an arithmetic expression or an if comparison, on a line with no obvious method call.

Context

An Integer, Long or Boolean from a map, DTO field or database column is null and is used where a primitive is required.

Root cause

Auto-unboxing calls intValue() on the wrapper. If the wrapper is null, that call throws.

  1. Read the helpful NPE message: it names the exact null expression.
  2. Handle absence explicitly: int value = x == null ? 0 : x; or Objects.requireNonNull(x, "x").
  3. For optional data, return Optional<Integer> and call orElseThrow at the boundary.

Verify:

mvn -q test -Dtest=NullUnboxTest

Expected: test passes and the null case produces the documented fallback

Lint diagnostics: missing_env, creates_files
