Symptom

A write to a map panics at runtime; reads from the same map returned zero values without error.

Context

A map is declared with var m map[string]int, embedded in a struct, or returned by a function whose error was ignored.

Root cause

A nil map supports reads but not writes. Declaration allocates only the map header, not the backing bucket array.

  1. Initialize before writing: m := make(map[string]int) or m := map[string]int{}.
  2. For struct fields, initialize in the constructor or lazily: if s.m == nil { s.m = make(map[string]int) }.
  3. Run the failing path under go test -race to catch concurrent writes in the same area.

Verify:

go test ./... -run TestMapWrite

Expected: PASS with no panic

Lint diagnostics: missing_env, verify_target_not_in_fix
