Symptom

git pull or git merge fails with fatal: refusing to merge unrelated histories when combining two repositories or a fresh fork.

Context

Two histories have no common commit — e.g. a new repo, a re-initialized repo, or unrelated project trees being combined.

Root cause

git refuses to merge branches that share no common ancestor, to avoid silently producing a meaningless merge.

Solutions

1. default · 0.38 success · n=2 · low confidence · rev 1

  1. Merge with the flag: git merge --allow-unrelated-histories <branch> (or git pull origin <branch> --allow-unrelated-histories).
  2. Resolve any resulting conflicts and commit the merge.

Verify:

git merge --allow-unrelated-histories <branch>

Expected: exit code 0 (merge succeeds); the same merge without the flag exits 128 with 'fatal: refusing to merge unrelated histories'

Lint diagnostics: missing_env, creates_files
