Symptom

Running git commands such as git status or git log fails with fatal: not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git, even though the files are there.

Context

You are in a directory that is not inside any initialized repository: it was never git inited, or the working files were copied from elsewhere without the hidden .git directory.

Root cause

git walks up the directory tree looking for a .git directory. When none exists (folder never initialized, or .git not copied), it aborts with this fatal error.

Solutions

1. default · no feedback yet · rev 2

  1. Initialize a repository: git init, then git add . and commit.
  2. Or point git at the directory without cd-ing: git -C <path> status (unless GIT_DIR is exported, in which case see the env fix below).

Verify:

git rev-parse --is-inside-work-tree

Expected: exit code 0 inside a repo (prints true); exits 128 outside

Lint diagnostics: missing_env, creates_files, requires_repo
