Symptom

Any git command (status, pull, commit, etc.) fails immediately with 'fatal: detected dubious ownership in repository at ...' even though the directory is a valid git repo and you can read the files.

Context

Git >= 2.35.2. Common after cloning or copying a repo as root (or another user) then switching to a normal user, or after mounting a volume with different ownership (Docker, WSL, shared folders, CI runners).

Root cause

Since 2.35.2 Git refuses to operate on a repository whose top-level directory is owned by a different user than the current process. This is a deliberate security measure against attacks that place a malicious .git directory in a world-writable location.

Solutions

1. Add the specific path to safe.directory (safe-directory) · no feedback yet · rev 1

Applies to: When the ownership difference is intentional and the path is trusted (most common fix) · Environment: linux · macos · windows · git

  1. git config --global --add safe.directory /absolute/path/to/repo

Verify:

git status

Expected: exit 0 (normal status output, no 'dubious ownership' message)

Lint diagnostics: mutates_global_config, requires_repo
