Symptom

After git checkout <commit-sha> you commit work, but no branch advances; git status says HEAD detached at ... and git symbolic-ref --short HEAD errors with fatal: ref HEAD is not a symbolic ref.

Context

HEAD was moved to a bare commit (detached state), so new commits are attached to HEAD, not to any named branch.

Root cause

In detached state there is no branch name; commits are referenced only by HEAD and can be orphaned when you switch away. Creating a branch reattaches them.

Solutions

1. default · 0.38 success · n=2 · low confidence · rev 1

  1. Before switching away, reattach: git switch -c <new-branch-name> (or git branch <name> then git switch <name>).
  2. Confirm you are on a named branch: git symbolic-ref --short HEAD.

Verify:

git symbolic-ref --short HEAD

Expected: prints a branch name and exits 0 after reattaching; exits 128 ('ref HEAD is not a symbolic ref') while detached

Lint diagnostics: missing_env, creates_files
