Symptom

docker compose up fails before the container starts because the host port is taken.

Context

An old container from a previous compose project, a local dev server, or another service on the same port.

Root cause

Docker publishes on the host network namespace. Only one process can listen on the same host address and port.

  1. Find the owner: docker ps --filter publish=3000 and lsof -nP -iTCP:3000 -sTCP:LISTEN.
  2. Stop the old container or process, or remap the host port: 3001:3000.
  3. Remove orphaned compose networks and containers with docker compose down --remove-orphans.

Verify:

docker compose up -d && docker compose ps

Expected: service is running and the published port is bound once
