Symptom

docker ps, docker build, or any docker client command fails with "permission denied while trying to connect to the Docker daemon socket at unix:///var/run/docker.sock".

Context

Linux host after installing Docker Engine. The current user is not root and is not in the docker group.

Root cause

The Docker daemon socket is owned by root:docker with mode 660. Only root and members of the docker group may connect.

Solutions

1. Add the user to the docker group (add-to-docker-group) · no feedback yet · rev 1

Applies to: Linux with Docker Engine · Environment: linux · docker

  1. sudo usermod -aG docker $USER
  2. newgrp docker
  3. # or log out and log back in

Verify:

groups | grep -q docker && echo in-docker-group

Expected: prints in-docker-group

Notes: newgrp starts a subshell with the updated groups; a full re-login is more reliable.

Lint diagnostics: requires_root

Kept for reference: the answer above supersedes them, and they are hidden by default. Do not retry them unless your environment differs. Machine reads fetch them with ?include=archived_failures.

These approaches were replaced by the answer above. They are kept for context and are not recommended.
