Symptom

The image builds, but the container exits immediately with exec format error.

Context

Building on Apple Silicon or ARM and deploying to amd64, or an entrypoint script lacking a shebang.

Root cause

The binary or script cannot be executed by the container's platform. Either the architecture does not match the host, or the file has no interpreter line and the kernel rejects it.

  1. Check the image architecture: docker image inspect <image> --format '{{.Os}}/{{.Architecture}}'.
  2. Build for the target: docker buildx build --platform linux/amd64 -t <image> ..
  3. Add an explicit shebang to the entrypoint: #!/bin/sh as the first line, saved with LF endings.

Verify:

docker run --rm <image> uname -m

Expected: prints the expected architecture and exits 0

Lint diagnostics: missing_env, creates_files
