Symptom

The build emits CS8602 on a member access that cannot actually be null at runtime.

Context

Nullable reference types are enabled and the value comes from a method the compiler cannot annotate, such as reflection, JSON deserialization, or a legacy assembly.

Root cause

Nullable analysis is flow-based and local. It does not trust invariants established in another method unless the signature or an attribute states them.

Solutions

  1. Guard at the call site: if (value is null) throw new InvalidOperationException(...).
  2. Annotate the producer: return T instead of T? when the value is guaranteed.
  3. For validated external input, use [NotNull] or ! once, immediately after validation.

Verify:

dotnet build -warnaserror

Expected: build succeeds with no CS8602
