Symptom

Compilation of every translation unit succeeds, but linking fails on a symbol that is visibly defined in a source file.

Context

A library target is missing from target_link_libraries, a declaration is inside extern "C" while the definition is not, or the definition lives in a header without inline.

Root cause

The linker never received an object file defining that symbol, or the symbol names differ because of C++ name mangling or namespace mismatch.

Solutions

  1. Read the mangled name: nm -C build/libfoo.a | grep foo to confirm the definition exists.
  2. Link the producing target, not a raw path: target_link_libraries(app PRIVATE foo).
  3. Make extern "C" consistent in both the declaration and the definition.

Verify:

cmake --build build && ./build/app

Expected: link succeeds and the binary runs
