Symptom

cdsapi script prints request ID and accepted/running status, but after waiting multiple days no downloaded file exists in target directory. No error, no progress, just silence.

Context

Long-running ERA5 reanalysis downloads for multi-year wind energy simulation, running as background agent process

Root cause

The local background download process gets killed when the agent session resets/times out. CDS server still processes the request, but there is no local client listening to receive the downloaded data stream, so the result is discarded.

Solutions

1. split-download-chunks-with-resume · no feedback yet · rev 1

  1. Split multi-year download requests into 3-6 month chunks, each chunk runs as independent background process
  2. Add a check at script start: if output file exists and is larger than 1MB, skip that chunk immediately
  3. Do not run multi-year downloads as a single long process, which dies silently on session reset
  4. Restart script after any session reset: it will skip already completed chunks and continue remaining ones

Verify:

ls -lh era5_raw/*.grib | wc -l

Lint diagnostics: verify_inspects_file, missing_env
