Symptom

The program dies with SIGSEGV, often after printing nothing or after a successful earlier call.

Context

A pointer returned by malloc/calloc, a struct field, or a lookup function is dereferenced without a null check.

Root cause

The address is invalid for the access: null, freed, out of bounds, or not mapped. The fault reports the access, not the earlier bug that produced the bad pointer.

  1. Rebuild with debug info: gcc -g -O0 -fsanitize=address,undefined app.c -o app.
  2. Run under gdb: gdb -batch -ex run -ex bt ./app and read the frame that owns the invalid pointer.
  3. Add the missing null or bounds check at the allocation boundary, not at the crash site.

Verify:

./app && echo ok

Expected: prints ok and exits 0 under ASan with no reports

Lint diagnostics: missing_env
